How to prepare ceremonial cacao at home

There is no single sacred recipe — cacao has been prepared a thousand ways across a thousand years. But if a beautiful block has just arrived at your door and you are standing in the kitchen wondering where to start, start here.

What you need

A sharp knife or a sturdy grater. A small pot. A whisk (a little bamboo whisk is lovely, an ordinary one is fine). A cup you love — this matters more than you think.

The simple method

Shave. Shave or chop your cacao finely — the finer it is, the more velvety your cup. For a gentle everyday cup, start with about two tablespoons of shavings; for a stronger ceremonial serve, you might work up towards double that over time. Begin small. You can always deepen later.

Warm. Heat water in the pot until it steams but does not boil — boiling scorches the delicate oils that carry all that aroma. About a cup of water for one serve. Plant milk works too, for a creamier cup.

Melt. Add the shavings to the warm water and whisk slowly as they melt. Watch it come together: dull flakes turning into something glossy and rich. This is the loveliest part — do not rush it.

Pour and pause. Pour it into your cup, wrap both hands around it, and take one slow breath before the first sip. That single pause is the difference between a hot drink and a ritual.

What to add

Honestly? Try it plain first — Chuncho cacao has a smooth, complex flavour that deserves at least one honest meeting. After that, a little honey or maple, a pinch of cinnamon, a whisper of chilli or sea salt are all traditional and beautiful. I would leave out anything that turns it into dessert; the gentle bitterness is part of the medicine of slowing down.

Making it a moment

You do not need a ceremony to drink cacao — but the cup does invite one. Put your phone in another room. Sit somewhere you like. Drink it slower than feels natural. If you want to take it further, light a candle, set one gentle intention, and let the cup hold the rest.

A few honest notes

Cacao contains naturally occurring stimulants, so consider your timing if you are sensitive — a 3pm cup is kinder than a 9pm one. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or managing a health condition, check with your health professional about ceremonial-strength serves. And store your block somewhere cool and dry, wrapped well; it is a living food and it likes to be looked after.

If your cupboard is still waiting for its first block — stay close. Something very special is coming to Wildfire soon, and the Wildfire list hears about it first.

Sending so much love,

Bryony 💗
