Crystal Sound Bowls, Sound Healing and How Tuning Forks Work
By Bryony Wildfire
There are some things the mind cannot think its way through.
Sometimes we need to come out of the noise, out of the analysing, out of constantly trying to fix ourselves—and simply allow the body to receive.
This is where sound can become such powerful medicine.
The future of healing is here and I am on a journey to show you how it is done and educate you all with me along the way.
Where modern science meets ancient wisdom.
For thousands of years, sound has been used in healing rituals, ceremonies and spiritual traditions around the world.
Long before we understood brainwaves, nervous system regulation or vibrational medicine, people knew that sound could shift something within us.
And now modern science is beginning to catch up.
Research suggests sound can influence brainwave activity, reduce stress, support nervous system regulation and guide the body into deeply restorative states associated with healing and repair.
Everything in existence vibrates.
Every atom.
Every cell.
Every organ.
Every heartbeat.
Every thought.
Every emotion.
We are not separate from frequency.
We are frequency.
I have been working with crystal sound bowls for more than sevem years now, and they remain incredibly close to my heart. The more I work with them, the more I understand that sound is not simply something we hear. It is something we feel. It moves through the room, through the body and through the places within us that words do not always know how to reach.
Sound and frequency is medicine.
In my sound-healing sessions, ceremonies and bodywork, I weave together seven crystal chakra bowls - each attuned to each of the seven energy centres in the body, therapeutic tuning forks, chimes and intuitive energy work to create what I can only describe as a full-body energetic recalibration—a space to slow down, soften, release and return home to yourself.
What Is Sound Healing?
At its simplest, sound healing is the intentional use of tone, rhythm, vibration and silence to support deep relaxation, awareness and connection.
Every sound is created by vibration. When a crystal bowl is played, the bowl vibrates and moves the air around it, creating sound waves that travel through the space and are received by the ears and body. When several bowls are played together, their fundamental tones and overtones begin to layer. The result is not just one note, but a rich field of sound that can feel as though it is washing over—and sometimes right through—you.
From a physical perspective, sound gives the mind something steady to rest upon. It can gently draw attention away from the endless stream of thoughts and into the present moment. Breathing may begin to deepen. Muscles may soften. The body may recognise that, for this moment, it is safe to stop doing.
From an energetic perspective, I experience sound as movement. It can bring awareness to places that feel blocked, heavy, disconnected or stagnant and invite them back into flow. It does not force the body to release. It creates a space in which the body may finally feel safe enough to let go.
That distinction matters to me. Healing is not something I do to somebody. I listen, feel and work intuitively—but your body carries its own intelligence, its own timing and its own wisdom.
The Seven Chakra Bowls
My seven crystal bowls are connected with the seven main chakras: energetic centres traditionally understood to relate to different aspects of our physical, emotional and spiritual experience.
Im chinese medcine these energy centres are referred to as the meridans in the body.
Many modern chakra bowl sets move through the musical notes C, D, E, F, G, A and B. Each bowl has its own tone and character, but the real magic happens when they begin speaking to one another. The frequencies overlap, harmonise and create gentle waves of tension and resolution. You are not only listening to music; you are lying inside it.
Often two or more bowls playing together create another frequency altogether.
Root Chakra — C
The root chakra is connected with grounding, safety, stability and belonging.
This is the energy of being fully here—in your body, on the earth and inside your own life. When someone has been living in survival mode, feeling scattered or carrying too much for too long, I often begin with grounding tones. Before we rise, open or expand, we need somewhere safe to land.
Sacral Chakra — D
The sacral chakra is associated with creativity, sensuality, emotion, pleasure and flow.
This energy reminds us that we are allowed to feel. We are allowed to create, receive, move and experience joy. Its bowl can feel fluid and gently awakening, especially when life has become rigid, disconnected or all responsibility with no space left for aliveness.
Solar Plexus Chakra — E
The solar plexus is our centre of personal power, confidence, direction and inner fire.
This frequency can invite us back into the part of ourselves that knows who we are. Not performative confidence. Not force. A quieter, steadier power—the feeling of standing within yourself and trusting your own yes, your own no and the path unfolding before you.
Heart Chakra — F
The heart chakra is connected with love, compassion, grief, forgiveness and our capacity to receive.
The heart bowl is incredibly special to me. Heart energy is not only about romantic love or being endlessly open. It is also about boundaries, softness, courage and allowing ourselves to be held. Sometimes sound around the heart brings a feeling of expansion. Sometimes it touches grief. Sometimes it simply creates room to breathe again.
Throat Chakra — G
The throat chakra relates to truth, expression, communication and authentic voice.
So much can live unspoken within the body: words we swallowed, needs we minimised, truths we were frightened to honour. The throat bowl can feel clearing and expansive, gently calling us back to honest expression—not necessarily louder, but truer.
Third Eye Chakra — A
The third eye is associated with intuition, inner vision, imagination and insight.
Its tone often brings a spacious, dreamlike quality. As the thinking mind becomes quieter, people may notice imagery, colours, memories or a deeper sense of knowing. Nothing has to happen. There is no spiritual performance required. Sometimes intuition arrives as a vision; sometimes it is simply the quiet realisation that you already know what you need.
Crown Chakra — B
The crown chakra represents spiritual connection, consciousness and our relationship with something greater than the individual self.
The crown bowl can feel light, expansive and ethereal. For me, it carries the energy of remembrance: that we are part of something far greater, yet everything we seek also lives within us.
I do not play the bowls as a rigid checklist, moving mechanically from one chakra to the next. Every person, treatment and ceremony has its own rhythm. I listen to the sound, to the body, to the energy in the room and to the spaces between the notes. The session unfolds intuitively from there.
How Do Tuning Forks Actually Work?
Tuning forks bring a more focused form of frequency into my work.
A tuning fork is made with two metal prongs, called tines. When the fork is activated, those tines move rapidly backwards and forwards at a specific rate. That rate is its frequency, measured in hertz. A fork marked 128 Hz vibrates 128 times per second; a 528 Hz fork vibrates 528 times per second.
That frequency is not imaginary—it is measurable physics.
As the tines move, they create alternating pressure waves in the surrounding air, which we experience as sound. When the stem of a suitable therapeutic fork is placed gently against the body, some of its mechanical vibration is transferred through the contact point. Instead of only hearing the frequency, you may also physically feel it as a hum, buzz or wave moving into the area.
This is why tuning forks can feel so precise. A bowl fills the room with sound, while a fork allows me to bring vibration to a more focused area of the body or energy field.
Weighted tuning forks have small weights attached to the ends of the tines. They usually vibrate more slowly and strongly, producing a sensation that is easier to feel through the handle when used against the body. Unweighted forks generally create a clearer, more audible tone and are often worked with around the ears or within the energetic field rather than pressed onto the body.
The nervous system receives that experience through hearing, touch, attention and expectation. A steady tone and repetitive vibration can become an anchor for awareness, giving the mind less to chase and the body an invitation to settle. When combined with intentional breathing, safe touch, stillness and a nurturing environment, this can support a deeply restorative state.
In energetic practice, different forks may also be worked with around chakras, meridians, acupressure points or areas that intuitively feel as though they are asking for attention. I often describe this as energy recalibration—not because the human body is a broken instrument that needs somebody else to tune it, but because focused vibration can help us pause, listen and reconnect with our own natural rhythm.
What About 528 Hz?
Okay now this one is for my fellow frequency and science lovers!
One frequency I feel particularly connected to is 528 Hz, often referred to within modern sound-healing traditions as the frequency of love, transformation and creation.
For me, it carries the energy of divine intelligence. It feels bright, heart-led and deeply alive.
Scientifically, what we can say with certainty is that a 528 Hz fork produces 528 cycles of vibration each second. The deeper spiritual meanings attached to that number belong to modern energetic traditions and personal experience rather than established medical science. I am comfortable holding both truths: honouring what can be measured while remaining open to what can only be felt.
174Hz invites the body to slow down, ground and rest. A gentle reminder that when we are constantly rushing, we miss the beauty of life itself.
285Hz is associated with restoration, realignment and cellular healing, supporting the body’s return to balance and harmony.
396Hz encourages the release of fear, guilt and emotional heaviness, helping us soften back into safety, trust and self-worth.
417Hz is the frequency of transformation, helping us release what no longer serves and step into a new chapter.
528Hz, often called the frequency of the heart, is associated with love, compassion, emotional healing and is believed by many to support cellular renewal and DNA repair.
852Hz awakens intuition, clarity and higher understanding, reconnecting us to the wisdom of our higher self.
963Hz is the frequency of remembrance. A return to wholeness, wonder, joy and truth,
Can Sound Really Heal?
The word healing does not have to mean curing a disease or promising that one frequency will magically fix everything.
Healing can be the moment your shoulders finally drop.
It can be one full breath after weeks of bracing.
It can be feeling safe enough to cry, rest or reconnect with a part of yourself you had pushed away. It can be leaving a session feeling lighter, clearer, softer and more at home in your body.
Research into singing bowls and sound-based meditation is still developing. Small studies and reviews have reported promising changes in self-reported tension, anxiety, mood and wellbeing, with some studies also observing changes in measures such as heart rate or blood pressure. However, the research varies considerably in quality and design, which means we should be curious without making exaggerated medical claims.
Sound healing is a complementary practice. It does not replace medical or psychological care when that care is needed. What it can offer is a powerful environment for rest, mindfulness, body awareness, emotional processing and nervous-system downshifting.
And in a world that constantly asks us to move faster, produce more and remain switched on, true rest is not insignificant. Sometimes it is revolutionary.
What Might You Feel During a Sound-Healing Session?
Every experience is different.
You may feel warmth, tingling, heaviness, lightness or gentle waves of sensation. You might see colours or imagery, remember something, feel emotion rise, drift between waking and sleep—or simply feel deeply relaxed.
You may also feel very little beyond enjoying the sound, and that is completely okay. You do not need to have a vision, an emotional release or an extraordinary spiritual experience for the session to be meaningful. There is nothing to achieve and no correct way to receive.
My role is to create a safe, intentional space in which you can completely surrender, reconnect with your body and allow the experience to meet you exactly where you are.
A Return to Your Own Frequency
Sound healing, for me, is not about becoming somebody new. It is about remembering what exists beneath the noise.
Beneath the tension, the responsibilities, the stories and the constant doing, there is a deeper rhythm. There is wisdom. There is softness. There is the part of you that has never been broken.
The bowls, forks and frequencies simply create a doorway.
You are the one who enters.
You are exactly where you need to be. Trust the path unfolding before you. Honour the wisdom within you. Everything you seek already lives inside your heart.
With love and blessings,
Bryony ♥
